Arnel, Guptill included in NZ Test squad

Uncapped fast bowler Brent Arnel and consistent one day international batsman Martin Guptill have been named in New Zealand’s 13-member squad for the first Test.

The Northern Districts medium fast bowler Brent Arnel is the newcomer to the New Zealand cricket squad for the first Test in the three-match series against India.

The medium-fast bowler was named in the squad for the first Test, which starts on March 17, after an impressive display in a recent 'A' game against England Lions.

The 30-year-old bowler finished with figures of 5-86 with 13 maidens in 36 overs. Incidentally, he also played against India A for New Zealand A in 2008.

Fast bowler Arnell was chosen ahead of provincial team-mate Tim Southee, who was discarded from the ODI set-up after conceding a record 105 runs from 10 overs in Christchurch on Sunday.

Head of the selection panel, Glenn Turner said Arnel has been the best performing bowler in the A side against the Lions. “He’s bowled well consistently over a period of time, and has the advantage of having done quite a bit of bowling in recent four-day matches,” Turner said.

Martin Guptill has progressed to the longest version after impressive performance in the Twenty20 Internationals and the ongoing ODI series. Guptill averages 48.87 after 11 ODIs with two half centuries and one century.

Jacob Oram was excluded from the squad as the medium fast bowler felt he needed some extra time to recover fully.

“He has made good progress in recovering from injury, but Jacob is not yet fully confident that his body would stand up to rigours of a five-day game. He now has the opportunity to play some four-day cricket for Central Districts – and he may well come into consideration for the later Test matches,” Turner added.

Jamie How, Mark Gillespie and Peter Fulton were part of the squad that played in the final Test against the West Indies last December but failed to make the cut for the opening Test.

James Franklin also returns to the side on the strength of good performances for New Zealand A, including an innings of 92 in the first four-day game against England A. Turner said Franklin comes in as an all-rounder, effectively taking Jacob Oram’s place.

Franklin's place in the New Zealand A squad for the Twenty20 game against the England Lions will be filled by Scott Styris, while Otago bowler Warren McSkimming comes into the A side for Arnel.

Jeetan Patel retains his place as the second spinner behind Vettori and may be employed in tandem with Daniel Vettori in the opening Test at Seddon Park.

The squad of 12 for the fifth ODI in Auckland on Saturday is unchanged from the side which played at Hamilton on Wednesday. Ian Butler remains unavailable due to injury.

Test squad: Daniel Vettori (captain), Brent Arnel, Daniel Flynn, James Franklin, Martin Guptill, Tim McIntosh, Brendon McCullum, Chris Martin, Kyle Mills, Iain O’Brien, Jeetan Patel, Jesse Ryder, Ross Taylor
