New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori, who missed Sunday’s 58-run loss to India in Christchurch with his wife giving birth to their first child - a baby boy, will return back to lead the squad in the fourth one day international.
He will have an important role to play as New Zealand battles to avoid its first ever series defeat on home soil since 2005 after trailing 0-2 in the five-match ODI series against India.
Medium-fast bowler Ian Butler was not included in the squad after suffering a muscle strain in the third ODI on Sunday, which limited him to bowling just five of his allotted 10 overs.
Selection panel head Glenn Turner said Butler should be available for selection for the final game in Auckland on Saturday.
His place has been taken by left-arm seamer Ewen Thompson, who played in a Twenty20 International against West Indies last year.
However, the most notable exclusion was that of fast bowler Tim Southee. The 20-year old youngster bore the brunt of bludgeoning Indian blades and was smashed for 105 runs off his 10 overs as India posted 392-4.
His figures of 105-0 is the third most expensive spell by a bowler who has bowled his allotted 10 overs in ODIs.
Peter McGlashan will again keep wickets with Brendon McCullum playing as a batsman only, having not recovered sufficiently from a thumb injury.
India leads the five match series 2-0 after the second ODI at Wellington was washed out.
New Zealand squad for fourth ODI: Daniel Vettori (captain), Grant Elliott, Martin Guptill, Brendon McCullum, Peter McGlashan, Kyle Mills, Iain O'Brien, Jacob Oram, Jeetan Patel, Jesse Ryder, Ross Taylor, Ewen Thompson.
